Vice President and Treasurer

Currently Vice President for Administration and Chief Financial Officer of Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio, Dr. Storck brings to Lycoming College more than 20 years experience in management of liberal arts institutions. Prior to joining Heidelberg, Dr. Storck served Otterbein College as Vice President for Business Affairs. His earlier experience includes service as Business Manager at Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania, Comptroller at Davis and Elkin’s College, and Assistant Comptroller at the University of Charleston. In these roles, Dr. Storck has held administrative responsibility in all financial matters including modeling, preparation, and control of annual operating budgets as well as investment oversight and cash management Dr. Storck is a graduate of King’s College and a CPA. He received a Master of Business Administration from York College, and earned his doctoral degree at Ohio University.


University of Puget Sound

Kate Stano
Director of Annual Giving

Ms. Stano comes to the University of Puget Sound from New London, Connecticut, where she served as Associate Director of Annual Giving at Connecticut College. In this role she helped the annual fund raise over $4.7 million and reach a 45% alumni giving rate this year, the highest dollar amount the annual fund has achieved at Connecticut College. Before entering the annual fund arena, Ms. Stano served in positions in financial aid at Holyoke Community College, Yale University’s Graduate School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, and Smith College. Also, prior to her work at Connecticut College, Ms. Stano worked in development and alumni relations at Springfield College. Ms. Stano is a graduate of Smith College, and received her Master of Education degree from Springfield College.


Arcadia University

Nick G. Costa
Vice President for University Development

Mr. Costa brings to Arcadia more than 25 years in development, and is currently Vice President for Development at the Devereux Foundation, the nation’s largest nonprofit organization serving individuals with special needs. Previous positions held by Mr. Costa include Senior Vice President at Stamford Health Foundation; Director of Development and Community Relations at Cooley Dickinson Hospital; and Vice President for Fund Development at Abington Memorial Hospital, where he was responsible for helping the Hospital raise more than $170 million, launching three major campaigns, and marketing a new planned giving program. As a teacher and trainer in the advancement field, Mr. Costa has led seminars and presentations on planned giving, donor motivation, capital campaigns, and financial reporting. He is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst; the author of Dream Builders, a comprehensive guide to major gift fundraising; and a Fellow of the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy.


Minnesota State University, Mankato

Marilyn Delmont
Vice President for Technology and Chief Information Officer

With over 15 years in administrative roles, Marilyn brings to Minnesota State University, Mankato an ability to merge strategic planning with a tactical, goal-oriented approach and a focus on cutting edge technology.  Currently serving as Chief Information Officer for the City of Chandler, Arizona, she directs citywide technology and manages a staff of 57 employees and a budget of over $16 million.  In addition to her experience in the government sector, Marilyn’s career has included senior administrative and technology management positions in high-tech businesses such as Amoco, Contel, and Monsanto.  Her in-depth understanding of IT in higher education includes assignments as Director of Computer Information Systems and Services at the Carter Presidential Center of Emory University, and Director of Management Information Systems at Spelman College in Atlanta.  Marilyn holds a Bachelor of Science degree in management information systems from Tarkio College and is a master’s candidate at the University of Phoenix.  She has received numerous awards including Ones to Watch Award 2006, CIO 100 2004 and 2005 Awards, and Digital Cities 2004 and 2006 Awards. 


Delaware Valley College

President
Dr. Joseph S. Brosnan

Dr. Joseph Brosnan is currently serving as Vice President for Strategic Planning and External Affairs at Teacher's College, Columbia University. Dr. Brosnan, a seasoned higher education administrator, previously served as President at Belmont Abby College and Senior Vice President for University Relations at Saint Bonaventure University. He led Teacher's College in securing $155 million in the largest campaign in history for an American school of education. Since the close of the campaign in 2003, the College has raised an additional $90 million. His dedication to excellence and advancement in higher education is evident throughout his lifelong career in the academy, which has included, in addition to administrative and fundraising leadership, service in educational administration and student affairs. Since 2005, he has served on the Board of Directors of the national “I Have a Dream” Foundation, which serves to motivate and empower children from low-income communities to achieve their educational and career goals.

 Dr. Brosnan holds a bachelor’s degree from Marist College, and master’s and doctorate degrees from State University of New York at Albany. He brings to Delaware Valley College experience in Board development and an extensive track record as a relationship builder and communicator. Dr. Brosnan has strong fiscal and management experience and a passion for leadership in higher education.


Dominican University of California

Dean for the School of Business and Leadership
Dr. Luis Ma. R. Calingo

With over ten years of experience in academic administration, 23 years in the California State University system, and teaching in both public and private institutions, Dr. Calingo is a truly outstanding academic leader.  He served most recently as Dean and Professor of International Business for the John M. & Mary Jo Boler School of Business at John Carroll University, and prior to that, as Dean and Professor of International Business at the College of Business Administration at California State University, Long Beach. In these positions, Dr. Calingo held administrative authority in all academic, fiscal, and personnel matters of the school.  At CSULB, he led the College’s strategic planning and quality improvement efforts that led to the 2002 California Prospector Award, the first and only recognition of its kind ever received by a business school in California. Under his leadership, CSULB created the Ukleja Center for Ethical Leadership, whose $2.5 million founding endowment is the largest single gift to any academic program in Long Beach.  His research portfolio includes 90 intellectual contributions with 18 of them produced in the past five years.  He has served as a member of the Board of Examiners for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the country’s highest award for quality and organizational excellence, since 1997.  Dr. Calingo holds a Ph.D. from the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business, University of Pittsburgh with major areas of study in strategic management, planning and control system, and evaluation research.


Illinois College

Vice President for Institutional Advancement
Jason Scott Embry

Jason most recently served the University of Denver as Director of Development for the Daniels College of Business. As the Chief Development and External Relations Officer for the College of Business, Jason managed fundraising campaigns for the Burns School of Real Estate and Construction Management; the School of Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management; and the School of Accountancy, with goals totaling $76 million. He previously led the Centre College Annual Giving Program, which maintained the number one national ranking in alumni participation with levels as high as 67.3% annually. Jason was promoted to Director of Campaign Giving at Centre College and worked with Centre’s team to plan and implement a $120 million endowment campaign. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Western Kentucky University and a Master of Education from Vanderbilt University. Jason brings to Illinois College a passion for liberal arts education; strong organizational skills; and expertise in annual giving, campaign planning, and donor cultivation.


Wright State University

Jan Hillman

Ms. Hillman is currently serving as the Executive Director of the Marquette General Foundation in Marquette, Michigan. In just under two years at Marquette General, Jan helped plan and start up the new Foundation that has raised over $1.85 million to date. Her prior work experience includes 22 years as the Chief Executive Officer of Hillman Associates, Inc. where she served as a consultant primarily for higher education institutions and health care clients around the country. Such clients included Wright State University, Kent State University, Clark State Community College, Wilberforce University, Central State University, Lincoln University, Kettering Medical Center, and Grandview Hospital and Medical Center. Jan’s expertise includes campaign fundraising, project development, program evaluation, research, strategic planning, marketing, and grant writing.


North Carolina Wesleyan College

Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of the College
Dr. John Thornell

Dr. John Thornell has been named by North Carolina Wesleyan College as its new Vice President for Academic Affairs & Dean of the College. Dr. Thornell currently serves as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Delta State University where his career has spanned more than 30 years. Since 1975, he served as Professor of Education and History and in 1978 was appointed Director of Institutional Research. Subsequent appointments include Dean of Graduate Studies and Continuing Education and Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs.  Throughout his administrative career, Dr. Thornell has continued his scholarly work, publishing and presenting frequently. He has authored or co-authored over $3 million in grant funding. A staunch supporter of accreditation as an indicator of academic quality, Dr. Thornell is an active leader and evaluator with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. As an academic leader, he has focused on faculty development, enhanced instruction, and the application of scholarship to pedagogy and learning.  We wish Dr. John Thornell and North Carolina Wesleyan College continued success!


Emporia State University

Judith Heasley

A seasoned fundraising professional with over two decades of experience in higher education advancement, Judy currently serves as Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado. In this role, she has organized the development department to align its focus with the College’s strategic plan. Prior to her arrival at Fort Lewis, Judy served two roles at Arizona State University—first as a Senior Development Officer/Director of Development and Community Relations and then as Senior Director of College Advancement. While at ASU as Senior Development Officer, Judy served as the ASU Polytechnic campus campaign director for the campaign For Leadership, which raised $26.5 million on an original goal of $8 million. Her experience in public institutions is expansive and diverse and includes appointments as Director of Major Gifts at Weber State University and Director of External Relations for the College of Business Administration at Texas Tech University. Judy holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Northern Arizona University and a Master of Science in Higher Education and Business Management from Texas Tech University.


Rocky Mountain Institute

Justine Nathanson

Ms. Nathanson formerly served as the Director of Development for the Women’s Foundation of Colorado in Denver. Her prior work experience includes five years as the Development Director at Project PAVE in Denver and four years as the Development Director of the Colorado AIDS Project where she was responsible for all aspects of development, marketing, and communication efforts.

James Kozel

Mr. Kozel began his fundraising career in 1979 with the United Way, and since then has served as Major Firms Director with the Mile High United Way; Executive Director of the United Way of Medina County, Ohio; Director of Planned Giving at St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland; and most recently as a development officer with the Cleveland Institute of Music since 2001.

Melissa Drane
Director of Development

Melissa Drane comes to COCA from George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, where she has served as Director of Leadership Gifts since 2001. While at George Mason, Melissa worked closely with the President and other select high-level university administrators to manage a strategic plan for raising gifts of $100,000 and above, as part of a successful, seven-year, $140 million comprehensive campaign that concluded in 2005. Melissa’s previous appointments include: Director of Development for the College of Health and Human Performance, followed by Director of Development for the College of Behavioral Sciences, both at the University of Maryland; Director of Annual Fund and Departmental Endowment for the Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital at the University Hospitals of Cleveland; and Promotions Coordinator for Alumni and Parent Relations at Case Western Reserve. Melissa graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle with a
Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Studio Art.


University of Puget Sound

Allison Cannady-Smith
Director of Alumni and Parent Relations

Allison Cannady-Smith comes to Puget Sound from the University of Pennsylvania, where she has held progressively responsible roles in Development, Alumni Relations, and the Office of the University Secretary for 14 years. Most recently, she served as the Director of Overseer Affairs, managing the central University’s relationship with the 16 individual schools and center boards of overseers, which includes about 500 alumni, parents, and friends of the University. She also assisted in creating a pipeline program, allowing smaller schools and programs, along with the larger schools, to cultivate a strong base of alumni and parents who have not yet become involved in the University. This pipeline has played a critical role in cultivating Penn’s volunteer leadership and has led to significant contributions to the University. Her prior work experience at Penn includes serving as the Assistant Director of Development for the Agenda for Excellence and as the Associate Director of Alumni Relations. In these positions she helped to increase alumni giving by 30% annually, built the University’s first Affinity and Interest Group alumni program, and strengthened the relationship between the Alumni and Development offices. We wish Allison and the University of Puget Sound continued success.


North Carolina Wesleyan College

Malcolm Woodall
Vice President for Development

Malcolm Woodall brings to the College a history of success in higher education advancement. In his most recent assignment, serving Lewis University as Vice President for Advancement, he implemented the largest campaign in the institution’s history, targeting a $30 million goal. As Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Loyola University, Malcolm led his team to record levels of achievement in philanthropic support, and at East Carolina University, serving as Associate Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement, he developed the plan for ECU’s $100 million centennial campaign. Other successes include service to Point Park College and Carnegie Mellon University. Malcolm is a graduate of Point Park, and earned his master’s degree from the H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy and Management at Carnegie Mellon University. We wish Malcolm Woodall and North Carolina Wesleyan College continued success.


California Institute of Technology

Dr. Sandya Narayanswami
Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations

Dr. Narayanswami currently serves as Senior Foundation and Corporate Relations Officer at the Wistar Institute in Philadelphia, where foundation revenue has doubled each year following her arrival in 2004. Her prior work experience includes Founding Consultant for Science Communications & Consulting; Director of Foundation Relations at University of Washington, Seattle; and Associate Staff Scientist at The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine. Sandya holds a B.Sc. (Hons) in Biological Sciences from Leicester University, England. After earning her Ph.D. from the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, she received postdoctoral training at l’Universite Louis Pasteur, Strasbourg, France, in the laboratory of Pierre Chambon, and at the University of California, Irvine. Professional affiliations include the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and The Indus Entrepreneurs, Seattle Chapter.


Savannah College of Art and Design

Dr. J. Joseph Hoey, IV
Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness

Dr. Hoey comes to Savannah College of Art and Design from Georgia Institute of Technology where he served as Director of the Office of Assessment since 1998. His responsibilities included assessment of student learning, quality assurance and accountability reporting, SACS and professional accreditation compliance, funded project evaluation, and academic program review. Dr. Hoey is Past President of the Southern Association for Institutional Research; is a frequent speaker and presenter on assessment, evaluation, and accreditation issues at regional and national conferences; and serves as an evaluator for the Commission on Colleges, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. His published research focuses on academic program review, alumni and employer feedback, community college transfer, and evaluation of online academic programs. Dr. Hoey’s extensive background includes assessment roles with North Carolina State University and Vance-Granville Community College, as well as a previous successful career in the performing arts. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of California, San Diego, his master’s degree from Florida State University, and his doctorate from North Carolina State University.

Laura Chauvin
Vice President for Development

Currently Assistant Vice Chancellor and Director of Alumni Relations at Washington University in Saint Louis, Laura has served this world-class University since 1988, building a highly effective alumni relations function. Laura received her bachelor’s degree in Human Development from Vanderbilt University, and will receive her master’s degree in Human Resource Management from Washington University in August 2006.

Dr. Gary Kornell
Senior Director of Development for the School of Arts & Sciences

Gary joins Washington University having served most recently as Vice President for University Advancement at Nebraska Wesleyan University. In this capacity, Gary provided strategic leadership for the design and implementation of Nebraska Wesleyan’s campaign that included a reorganization of advancement staff and the establishment of a major gifts program. Previously, Gary served as Senior Pastor for the Old Stone Church in Cleveland, Ohio and Senior Pastor for the Collingwood Presbyterian Church in Toledo, Ohio. His career also spans both the nonprofit and for-profit realms with experience as an organizational consultant and a stockbroker. Gary holds a Bachelor of Arts from Baylor University, a Master of Divinity from Vanderbilt Divinity School, and a Doctorate of Ministry from Drew Theological School.


Washington University

Diane Ryberg
Director of Development for the George Warren Brown School of Social Work

Diane Ryberg served as Vice President for Institutional Advancement at the Missouri Historical Society and was responsible for raising funds to support the Society’s exhibits, including the recent Lewis and Clark bicentennial exhibition in 2004.  As the Assistant Executive Director for the Girl Scout Council of Greater St. Louis, Diane directed a $7.1 million capital campaign, surpassing the Council’s original goal of $6.1 million.  Prior to her role at the Girl Scout Council, Diane served as Director of Development for The Salvation Army Midland Division where she successfully directed a $10 million capital campaign.


Minnesota State University, Mankato

Richard J. Straka
Vice President for Finance and Administration

With almost 19 years of experience within the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System, Rick Straka comes to Minnesota State University, Mankato from South Central College in Minnesota where he has served for ten years as the Vice President for Finance and Operations. In this function, Rick has provided leadership to and coordination of all financial and facility operations as well as oversight of a $30 million annual budget for a two-campus college. Prior appointments include work with Minnesota State University, Mankato as Budget Officer and as Coordinator of Athletic Management and Finance. During his early tenure at Mankato, Rick had the opportunity to work with Dean Trauger, the retiring Vice President for Finance and Administration. Rick graduated magna cum laude from Gustavus Adolphus College with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and has completed Master of Business Administration coursework at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Rick brings to this position not only outstanding experience in higher education finance and administration, but also valuable experience in working within the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System.


Averett University

Page A. Stooks
Vice President for Institutional Advancement

Page Stooks comes to Averett after having served a 14-year tenure in various advancement roles at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.  Page spent the last five years at Old Dominion as the Capital Campaign Manager/Director of Major Gifts/Senior Development Officer. In this role, she managed the collaboration of advancement services, including publications, media and alumni relations, and the major gifts program.  She and her team planned and executed a $100 million capital campaign that is well on its way to reaching its goal.  While at Old Dominion, Page played a large role in assisting the University to grow its endowment from $12 million to $150 million.  Prior assignments at Old Dominion University include Associate Director of Development, Director of Annual Giving, and Assistant Director of Annual Giving.  Page’s career spans corporate marketing and sales in the for-profit sector as well as development experience with not-for-profit organizations.  Her experience has granted her numerous strengths, including strategic planning as well as budget and staff management.
