Carson Walburn previously served as Director of the SAE Foundation, which provides support for the educational outreach programs of SAE International, a global provider of standards development, education, events, and technical information and expertise for the mobility industry that includes the aerospace, automotive, and commercial vehicle communities. Prior to joining SAE, Walburn was Executive Director of Development at Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, Pennsylvania. He began his development career at Harvard Business School in Boston, Massachusetts, where he served as assistant director of the Harvard Business School Fund. Before entering the development field, Walburn spent six years in the financial industry working as an investment strategist. He holds a Master of Science degree in Non-Profit Management from Robert Morris University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations from Bridgewater College of Virginia.
Robert Schmoll joins the staff at Bethany after serving in a number of diverse positions at Dana College in Blair, Nebraska since 1985. His most recent position was as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, which he’s held since 2000. With more than 25 years of experience in higher education administration, he has provided leadership for several areas on campus as well as campus-wide budgeting and strategic planning. Other positions held at Dana included Director of Alumni Affairs, Annual Fund Director, Director of Computer Services and Information Management, Assistant to the President, and Vice President for Business Affairs. Outside of higher education Robert spent four years in the United States Coast Guard, has worked as Executive Vice President for Infinite Information Systems, Inc., and has served as President of Computer Systems Design. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Dana College and a Master of Arts in Business Administration from the University of Nebraska.
Dr. Schantz is currently serving Hendrix College as the Associate Provost for Engaged Learning, Professor of History, and Director of the Odyssey Program, which he has directed since its inception in 2005. A component of the curriculum at Hendrix, Odyssey is a pioneering effort that focuses on engaged learning by encouraging students to embark on educational adventures personalized to their own interests and abilities. Dr. Schantz joined the Hendrix faculty in 1991 as an Assistant Professor and also served as Chair of both the Department of History and Social Science. He has published and lectured extensively on American history and is the author of two books, Piety in Providence: Class Dimensions of Religious Experience in Antebellum Rhode Island and Awaiting the Heavenly Country: The Civil War and America’s Culture of Death, which was published this year and reviewed by The New Yorker and the New York Review of Books. A Washington, D.C. native, Dr. Schantz received a bachelor’s degree Phi Beta Kappa from George Washington University, a master of Divinity from Yale University, a doctorate from Emory University, and completed the Management Development Program in the Graduate School of Education at Harvard University in 2007.
Dr. Franks served as Executive Vice President at Greensboro College in North Carolina. She brings 20 years of experience in higher education leadership, and her roles have included responsibility for admissions, financial aid, student life, marketing and communications, public relations, and fundraising with major prospects. Dr. Franks joined Greensboro College in 1988 as the Dean for Student Development and during her tenure has received four significant promotions with increasingly expanded responsibilities for leadership and administration of the College. Her advancement in higher education administration culminated in being named Executive Vice President in 2007. During her years at Greensboro College, enrollment has nearly doubled, and significant expansion of facilities and programs that enrich the student experience have been made. Dr. Franks has been active both professionally and as a community leader. She is past president of the North Carolina Association for Woman in Education, provided years of service to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and has been actively involved in professional associations. Dr. Franks received a B.A. from Ohio Dominican University, a M.A. in Education from The Ohio State University, and a Doctorate in Higher Education Management from the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Turner was formerly President of Hardin-Simmons University (HSU) in Abilene, Texas, and has also served the University as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, and Executive Vice President and Chief Academic Officer. He began his service to HSU in 1992 as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Professor of English. During his tenure as President, HSU has seen record enrollments and endowment growth, and completed a successful $49.7 million campaign, the largest in its history. The University successfully completed its Commission on Colleges reaccreditation in 2007, and has been chosen as a Top Tier institution by U.S. News & World Report for six consecutive years as well as a Best in the West institution by Princeton Review for five consecutive years. Dr. Turner came to HSU from Mississippi College (MC) in Clinton, Mississippi, where he was Head of the English Department and Professor of English. While at MC, he was chosen as “Teacher of the Year,” cited as “Scholar of the Year,” and elected President of the Faculty. Previously he served as a tenured Assistant and Associate Professor of English at Texas A&M University and as a visiting instructor at Baylor University. Dr. Turner earned the Doctor of Philosophy degree from Tulane University in British and American Literature, and earned two degrees from Baylor: the Master of Arts in English and the Bachelor of Arts in English and History.
