Bringing in a consultant in times of organizational stress can be as frightening as it is reassuring. We all have an innate desire to put the best face on things, to represent ourselves and our organizations as doing well. We may feel disloyal or embarrassed to say that there are difficulties or conflicts we can’t overcome alone. If there are problems in the organization, how do you tell the consultant and how much do you tell?
Your consultant needs a clear and forthright
picture of your needs, and that will sometimes
require you to expose sensitive or uncomfortable facts. At the same time, both you and your consultant need to understand all the positive factors. A good rule is to be factual about everything, positive and negative, and when you need to express an opinion, make sure you clarify that it is an opinion.
You should also remember that a reputable consultant will respect and protect your confidentiality and the security of your organization. Above all, keep in mind that the consultant is on your side.
