Recruitment Effort
Sooner or later you are going to have to replace a staff member. Retirements, resignations, even terminations will leave you wondering how to manage your existing workload and still have time to find new staff.
There are some things you can do to prepare to fill any vacant position in a timely and efficient manner. Remember the old saw, "Failure to plan is planning to fail."
- Clarify the values of the search committee regarding the characteristics of the ideal candidate.
- Clarify the resources that will support the successful candidate.
- Clarify the expectations for and the measurement of successful performance for the position.
- Review and update the job description.
- Ask key volunteers for nominations.
- Be prompt and courteous with all candidates.
Whatever you do, however:
- Don’t just place advertisements and expect lots of high-quality candidates.
- Don’t fail to set and keep a schedule.
- Don’t fail to market the institution and sell the opportunity to candidates.
- Don’t underestimate the importance of a good consultant to the successful outcome of your search
