You Can't Be
Too Careful!

When reading an announcement of an exciting position opening, it is easy to overlook details or even to miss a major requirement for being considered. Spend some time on careful review of position announcements and make sure you understand what the employer is looking for in a new hire.

Qualifications: Check to see if you meet the employer's specifications for education and previous employment. If you don't, but you believe you are qualified to do the job by nature of your life experience, be prepared to describe in detail why the employer should consider you.

Responsibilities: Make sure the parameters of the job are ones you understand and already feel comfortable with or ones you can quickly learn to fulfill. If you will need to learn or re-learn some parts of the job, decide how you will go about getting up to speed. The potential employer will want to know.

Organization: Understand the organization you are applying to. Their unique age, size, scope, location, accomplishments, and mission will affect what they need and who appears as an attractive candidate. Be sure that your personal style and aspirations can fit into the organization's image and goals.

Instructions: If specific instructions are given for making an application, be sure to adhere to them. Pay attention to addresses, dates, and required inclusions.

Careful attention to the employer's needs will make your application more effective and increase your chances for success.
